Reported Crime Continues Encouraging Decline 

Memphis, TN – APRIL 14, 2026 – According to preliminary figures from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and released by the University of Memphis Public Safety Institute and Memphis Shelby Crime Commission, reported crime continued to decline across the board during the first quarter of 2026 (January-March).

Major violent crime includes the categories of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In Memphis, the major violent crime rate dropped 30.5 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025. In all of Shelby County, the decline was 29.3 percent. Major violent crime started trending down in 2024 The major violent crime rate in Memphis plummeted 40.4 percent compared to the first quarter of 2023. Countywide, the decline was 39.5 percent. Every category of major violent crime declined compared to the first quarter of 2025.
