Memphis, TN – JANUARY 14, 2026 – The University of Memphis Public Safety Institute and the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission have released preliminary figures from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for 2025 showing across the board declines in major crime categories. Major violent crime includes victims of reported murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults. In Memphis, the major violent crime rate dropped 27.6 percent compared to 2024 and, significantly, was lower than all eight previous years (20172024). Countywide, the major violent crime rate dropped 27.1 percent compared to 2024, again lower than any of the previous eight years.
