A MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY
Fellow Memphians/Shelby Countians:
The Crime Commission is committed to improving public safety by identifying and promoting evidence -based and evidence – informed best practices. It is governed by a 50 – member board of directors. It is the leading community -based entity focused on public safety. Best practices identified and promoted by the Crime Commission have included creation of a multi -agency gang unit, creation of a domestic violence court and a drug treatment court, support for a data -driven Memphis police force composed of 2500 officers, implementation of a focused deterrence initiative targeted to those responsible for much of our crime, vigorous p rosecution of gun crimes coupled with stronger state sentencing laws to address gun violence, coordination of services to victims of domestic violence, more intensive efforts to place those returning to the community from incarceration into jobs, creation of a special MPD unit to investigate aggravated assaults involving non – fatal shootings, elimination of a residency requirement for law enforcem ent officers, and elimination of the arbitrary 19 th birthday for supervision of those convicted in juvenile court for serious crimes. The Crime Commission places proposed best practices under the umbrella of a Safe Community Action Plan. The current plan encompasses Mayor Paul Young’s Gun Violence.
